Privacy notice
Your location stays under your control.
Effective 16 August 2026
Astra Chron does not require an account. The app uses location and viewing information only to provide its astronomy, mapping, sharing, and saved-location features.
Device location
Your browser is asked for location access only when you select Use My Location. If permission is granted, the coordinates are used to move the observer and are sent to BigDataCloud to obtain a nearby place name. You can withdraw location permission in your browser settings.
Maps, terrain, and place search
Map, terrain, imagery, geocoding, and Photo 3D requests are supplied by services including Cesium ion, Google, and OpenStreetMap providers. Those services receive the technical request information needed to deliver their content, such as your IP address and the requested map area. Their own privacy terms apply.
Saved information on this device
Saved locations and panel layout preferences are stored in your browser’s local storage. They are not uploaded to an Astra Chron account. You can remove individual saved locations in the app or clear the site’s stored data through your browser.
Analytics
Astra Chron uses Google Analytics to understand aggregate usage and improve the service. This may process information such as pages viewed, device and browser details, approximate location derived from network information, and interaction timing.
Shared links
When you create a short share link, the selected coordinates, date, time, and view settings are stored by Astra Chron for up to one year. We count link resolutions and confirmed opens so administrators can understand whether links are used and respond to abuse. Anonymous rate-limit identifiers are derived from a guest cookie and network address; raw network addresses are not stored in the share database. Anyone who receives a share link can open its saved location and settings, so review the location before sharing it.
Your choices
- Decline or revoke browser location permission.
- Remove saved locations or clear local site data.
- Use browser privacy controls to limit analytics and third-party storage.
- Avoid sharing links containing a location you consider sensitive.
